The Wonders of Water!

Water is fuel for every cell in your body. It is nature’s medicine.  It enhances optimal energy output. Body: move efficiently with strength and flexibility. Mind: concentrate clearly. Water flushes out toxins that weaken the body and mind, rejuvenates cells and supports new cell growth. Practice carrying a water bottle with you all day. Chug 2x every 15 minutes.  Yes, you’ll have to go the bathroom more often. Your body is flushing, cells are rejuvenating and energy is expanding! Formula = Drink ½ your body weight in ounces of water per day. Ex. 140 / 2 = 70 oz.

A Pinch of Salt for Symptoms of Dehydration!
Have a headache? Allergies flaring up? Feeling light-headed after exercise? 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.  Our bodies are 75% water.  In addition to headaches and allergies, symptoms such as asthma, fatgiue, mood swings, dizziness and poor concentration are our body's way of telling us we are dehydrated.  Don't wait for a parched tongue to realize you're thirsty!

Rethink popping a pill to numb and mask that headache. Delve deep to the core of the issue. Consider this! To raise your hydration level, put a pinch of salt on your tongue for fifteen seconds, then swallow with water. This little trick works. The salt on the tongue sends a little message to the brain that then sends a big message to the body to retain water. Water retention is crucial so the body and mind can function with optimal health.

WELLNESS: Basic Instincts

·         Breathe: Your breath is your life force. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Breathe through your nose. Inhale for four seconds. Exhale for four seconds.  Relax your shoulders. Expand your lungs like wings.  This is Ujjayi Pranayama. Deep breathing.
·         Water: Water is fuel for every cell in your body.
·         Food: Eat something nutritious every two hours. Avoid packaged food. Eat food from the earth. An apple. A carrot. A cup of yogurt drizzled with maple syrup and almonds. Get creative and gobble it up.  Digested food = energy = strength, flexibility and concentration
·         Exercise: Listen to your body and intuition. “Do I push it or do I rest?”  Formula = water, yoga, water, basketball, water, yoga, lay in stillness and silence on your back in Savasana (Corpse Pose).  Yoga blends movement and breath so your body and mind are energized and focused.
·         Rest: Take a 60-second power nap every day. Sleep 8-10 hours per night.  For the 1st five minutes in bed, lay in Savasana (Corpse Pose) on your back so your spine is straight and grounded. Practice Ujjayi Pranayama. Then roll to one side and hug a king-size pillow between your knees and elbows. This will keep the vertebrae of your spine aligned throughout the night so your nerve system can "breathe" and so you aren’t stiff and sore in the morning. Roll to the other side by taking the pillow with you.
·       Your Spine: Your body is a self-healing organism. Your spine and nerve system is the reason your body functions efficiently. A healthy spinal cord allows the brain to send messages through the nerves to your body’s organs so they can function properly.  If any of the 24 vertebrae in your spine are subluxated (out of alignment) causing the nerves to compress, the messages are blocked. As a result, the body develops symptoms of illness. A healthy you starts with a healthy spine.

When you tune in and take care of yourself,
the basic instincts work in unison to keep you healthy

Mindful Mornings

Feeling sluggish at the thought of having to roll out of bed? Being more mindful of how our perception of a new day can affect the next 24 hours makes a difference when it comes to experiencing a grumpy day or a groovy day. As the sun rises at dawn with conviction and steadfast energy, create a fun and invigoratingly gentle embrace to your new day.

Here's an example:

1. When consciousness emerges from a sleep state, think, "I am grateful for this moment."
2. Sit up slowly, sit in lotus yoga pose or dangle your legs over the side of the bed, and take 10 deep breaths.
3. Create and repeat a mantra, something positive, such as, "Gratitude breaths light and love" that you say with each breath. It can be as simple as thinking of the word "light" while you inhale and thinking of the word "love" while you exhale.
4. Tred lightly when you do step onto the floor, being grateful for Mother Earth's offering of strength and stability.
5. Drink a full glass of water.
6. Time dependent, practice 1 - 10+ yoga Sun Salutations to awaken your mind, body and spirit. Continue your mantra with each breath to further awaken rhythm and energy flow.
7. Eat a grapefruit! A sure treat for the senses and it is a high alkaline food.
8. Carry this mindfulness and openness throughout your day.

Warning: You might find while stuck in traffic that your morning mantra will venture its way into your consciousness and onto your tongue to ease anxiety and invite calm and reason. Feel free to share it with the world.
